The Hunterian Museum collections, brought together over four centuries by a cast of colourful characters including John Hunter (1728-1793), are a fascinating mix of comparative anatomy and pathology specimens; complete skeletons, bones, skulls and teeth; dried preparations, corrosion casts and wax teaching models; historical surgical and dental instruments together with modern surgical instruments and technologies; as well as paintings, drawings and sculpture.
At the entrance to the museum visitors can trace the story of the College from its roots in the mediaeval Guild of Barber-Surgeons to the present day in a new introductory gallery. It features some of the Museum's oldest artefacts, including the anatomical tables commissioned by John Evelyn in the 1640s.
The Hunterian Museum Project has created a publicly accessible museum that encourages a wider audience to explore the scientific, cultural and historical importance of the museum collections. The project enables a greater number and more diverse range of visitors to share the wealth of material that has been a source of inspiration to surgeons, scientists and artists for over 200 years.
The Wellcome Museum contains a modern anatomical and pathological teaching collection and is used to support the educational and training work of the College. Access is restricted to members of the College and to qualified practitioners and students of medicine, nursing and related subjects.
The Hunterian Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free and the museum is open to all.
