During the two hundred years or so since Capability Brown laid out the parkland and Sir Christopher Sykes, 2nd Baronet, started the building of Sledmere, the house has become filled with works of art reflecting very different tastes and life styles of the succedding generations of the Sykes family.

Such as the Turkish room, designed for Sir Mark, an astonishing room to find in a country house; the magnificent plasterwork decoration, never bettered by its creator Joseph Rose, commissioned by Sir Christopher; the Horse Room with its evidence of the old Sir Tatton's passion and achievements, and, the splendid pipe organ bought by Sir Richard from Dunecht House in Aberdeenshire, which fills the house with music for the visitor.

Visitors are welcome to share the peace and quiet of the parkland and woodland walks, to wander throught the Rose and Knot Gardens, and then to enjoy anthing from tea to a full meal in the terrace cafe, to shop in the attractive gift shop or to visit the fascinating exhibition which tells the story of Sledmere and the Sykes family and the small museum devoted to the unique and touching story of the Wagoners Special Reserve (a private regiment raised by Sir Mark Sykes).

And there is the church, rebuilt by Sir Tatton Sykes, and the Monuments on the green in the village, all exceptional in their own right.
