One of England's most beloved stately homes, Knebworth House is famous worldwide for its rock concerts and as the home of Victorian novelist Edward Bulwer Lytton - author of the words "The pen is mightier than the sword" - this beautiful gothic mansion is situated 29 miles north of London off the A1(M) at Stevenage.

Knebworth is now known the world over for our huge open-air rock concerts - but not everyone is aware of its history and romance. Knebworth House is unique - originally a red-brick Tudor manor house, it was transformed in 1843 into the gothic fantasy we see today, with turrets, griffins and gargoyles. I certainly have never seen another house like it. Come inside and you will find it retains the warmth and atmosphere of its mediaeval origin.

The romantic exterior of Knebworth with its turrets, domes and gargoyles silhouetted against the sky does little to prepare the visitor for what to expect inside. The house has stood for many years longer than the nineteenth-century decoration would suggest. The stucco hides from view a red brick house dating back to Tudor times.

Knebworth House and Country Park are open weekends and school holidays until the end of September.
