Sutherland is a lieutenancy area, a registration county and a historic county of Scotland that now falls under the Highlands region of Scotland. Its county town is Dornoch and it was bounded by the Atlantic coast in the north and west, the historic Ross and Cromarty county in the south and Caithness to the north and east. It was abolished as an administrative county in 1975 when it became one of the eight districts of the Highlands region.
