Montgomeryshire is a former administrative Welsh county and one of thirteen historic counties. Formerly known as Maldwyn it constituted the northern section of the modern county area of Powys. Montgomery was considered the county town and the borders corresponded to the medieval kingdom of Powys. It was bordered by Merionethshire to the north west, Cardiganshire to the south west, Radnorshire to the south, Shropshire to the east and Denbighshire to the north.
The main towns are Welshpool, Newtown, Montgomery, Llanfyllin, Machynlleth and Llanidloes. The region is beautiful, made up of mountain ranges and fertile valleys and numerous trails (from Glyndwr's Way to the Cambrian Way, the Marches Way to Offas Dyke Path) that all pass through, as it used to stretch from the Dovey Estuary at Cardigan Bay all the way to the English border.
