Middlesex was a small historic county of England that contained the City of London. However the spread of Londons metropolitan area during the 18th and 19th centuries meant it was soon administered as a part of London metropolis itself. By midway through the twentieth century nearly all of Middlesex had been subsumed into Greater London, (although some parts also became part of Hertfordshire and Surrey) and the county disappeared formally. Nevertheless it is still referred to both as a postal county and an informal area name.
