The rhythms of passing time and tidal water flow through this dramatic exhibition of paintings and drawings by contemporary landscape artist Wendy Brooke-SmithThe show is anchored around a new collection of London paintings, exploring the artist's favourite subject matter of the Thames and its transient City skyline
Brooke-Smith is inspired by the changing nature of the river: "The Thames has so many personas - busy and blustery or calm and contemplative, brimming high water or revealing her secrets for the mudlarkers - and each time transforming our perception of the City around us"..
But the artist has also spent time over the past few summers sailing the outer fringes of the British and Irish coastline, accumulating a striking portfolio of 'life on the edge' and finding underlying currents of resilience and resourcefulness
As she explains: "I'm fascinated by the differing ways we exist alongside, or in spite of the forces of nature: the remote crofts and lighthouses of our coastal margins may seem a world away from London's urban jungle, but they are connected by the same patterns of tidal flow and human tenacity..isolation or integration is more of a social than a geographical issue"
Brooke-Smith paints in acrylic and oil, using initial charcoal drawings to develop ideas in her studioSeveral charcoal drawings, including a large series of the view from Tower Bridge, will be included in the exhibition
