Cadogan Gallery: A Group Exhibition
3 October 2024 - 8 February 2025
Cadogan Gallery, 7-9 Harriet Street

Coinciding with Frieze, London, Cadogan Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of its new flagship space in Belgravia and its inaugural presentation, Cadogan Gallery: A Group Exhibition. Opening on October 3, 2024, it remains on view through February 8, 2025, presenting its largest group exhibition to date with new works by both established and emerging artists, illustrating the gallery’s commitment to contemporary abstraction.

Unified by the artist-centred ethos and distinctive aesthetic, the exhibition is curated by Freddie Burness, Managing Director of Cadogan Gallery, and includes twenty-one of the artists within it’s roster; Andreas Diaz Andersson (1989, Sweden), Elise Ansel (1961, USA), Kim Bartelt (1970s, Germany), Lorenzo Brinati (1979, Italy), Lawrence Calver (1992, UK), Gabriele Cappelli (1972, Italy), Edoardo Dionea Cicconi (1985, Italy), Ramón Enrich (1968, Spain), Richard Hearns (1980, Lebanon/Dublin), Terrell James (1955, USA), Mimi Jung (1981, Korea), Tycjan Knut (1985, Poland), Laurence Leenaert (b.1989, Kortrijk, Belgium), Sam Lock (1973, UK), Nuria Maria (1990, Netherlands), Theo Pinto (1990, Brazil), Emanuel Seitz (1974, Germany), Deborah Tarr (1966, UK), Leonardo Anker Vandal (1988, Denmark), Maximilian Verhas (1960, Germany) and Richard Zinon (1985, UK).

Celebrating the rich materiality of contemporary abstraction, Cadogan Gallery: A Group Exhibition, seamlessly intertwines a captivating array of new works showcasing non-representational forms, material exploration, conceptual depth, and sustainable practices. From paintings using minimalist mark-making, to sculpture in marble and glass, as well as work exploring abstract and surreal landscapes, the exhibition is grounded in abstract expressionism, redefined by modern interpretations.

Centred upon a dialogue with artists who have grown with the gallery over the past decade alongside emerging and more established names, works on show include Deborah Tarr’s nuanced, contemplative paintings that explore internal and external landscapes, hovering on the boundary of figuration and abstraction to create a sense of completeness and tranquillity. Similar in theme is Texan artist Terrell James, whose works are a celebration of colour, exploring organic forms within the language of abstract expressionism. These artists sit alongside artworks by British artist Sam Lock known for his minimalist gestural works using unconventional materials to express the language of mark-making on canvas, inspired by the postmodernist theories of Beckett and Pinter.

Among the new works, Birches by Deborah Tarr, shows familiar experimentation with organic elements and introduces playful, tilted picture planes. The combination of the dynamic interplay of shapes and hues, evoke a sense of movement and rhythm with the use of broad, sweeping brushstrokes and blended intricate details that seem to flow and shift, capturing the essence of birch trees. Positioned alongside the refractions of light from bronze works such as Rolling Contrapost by Maximillian Verhas produce dazzling effects and play with expressions that remind us that abstract art is trying to achieve something beyond literal presentation.

Cadogan Gallery will be partnering with Thai restaurant Kiln, Soho for the opening evening.

About Andreas Diaz Andersson
Andreas Diaz Andersson (b.1989, Skanör-Falsterbo, Sweden) is a Swedish-Mexican artist known for his distinctly meticulous minimalist abstractions. Andersson’s work is defined by a harmonious use of shapes and lines achieved using textiles and different paint mediums such as acrylic, plastic colour and aerosol paint on cotton canvas. Alongside his brother’s design studio ATRA, Andersson has exhibited his works at fairs across the US including Design Miami. Diaz Andersson has been represented by Cadogan since 2021 and had his first solo exhibition in London with the gallery in Spring 2022.

Her works have been shown at the Berliner Liste Art Fair with Galerie LackeFarben and have been exhibited in group and solo shows in Chicago, Berlin, Paris, and London. A great admirer of Donald Judd, he moved to Marfa, Texas in 1988 where Judd lived and worked, spending time at the Judd Foundation and the Chinati Foundation. His works are held in public and private collections worldwide, most notably the private collections of David Hockney, Norman Foster and Donald Judd. Enrich has been represented by Cadogan Gallery since 2023 and had his first exhibition in London with the gallery in 2023.

About Richard Hearns
Richard Hearns (b.1980, Beirut, Lebanon and raised in Dublin) paints in the wild landscape of The Burren Country National Park in County Clare, Ireland. Hearns is deeply aware of the unique cultural backgrounds of both aspects of his heritage. Having studied in Dublin at The Institute of Art, Design and Technology and The National College of Art and Design, Richard's talent for drawing and line work led to a keen interest in observational painting. James has been included in over two hundred group shows and has completed over fifty solo exhibitions across the world. Her work is included in many museum collections, including: The Boston Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her designs quickly became sought after in high-end outlets such as The Conran Shop and the Picasso Museum. Leenaert has been represented by Cadogan Gallery since 2020 and had her first exhibition in London with the gallery in 2021.

About Sam Lock
Sam Lock (b.1973, London, UK) uses blowtorches and sanders as well as the brush, in each work and is the result of a continuous cycle of making. The physicality of Lock’s process is evident throughout his paintings and his expansive gestures and sweeping movements on a monumental scale as well as his smaller works reveal layers of past images and tones that drop in and out of themselves. He has exhibited regularly with Cadogan since 2015 in both our London and Hampshire spaces and has shown at various galleries and fairs in Europe and Asia. Lock has been represented by Cadogan Gallery since 2014 and had his first exhibition in London with the gallery in 2015.

About Deborah Tarr
Deborah Tarr’s (b.1966, Manchester, UK) paintings often reference real places, but they are never of ‘somewhere’. About Cadogan Gallery
Cadogan is a contemporary art gallery based in London and Milan. For over four decades our mission has been to champion a diverse roster of emerging and established artists. We care deeply about longevity, developing the careers of our artists and the journey of our collectors with a focus on fostering enduring connections.

Founded in 1980, we have operated in Belgravia and, more recently, Chelsea for over forty years. In 2023 we expanded our reach, with a new space in Milan; enriching our exhibitions programme and promoting our relationships with national and international artists, galleries and collectors.

Our decision to return to Belgravia with a new ambitious space in 2024, epitomises the gallery’s evolution, marking a poignant moment to showcase the evolution of artists that have worked with us since the gallery’s founding, alongside a new generation of artists, all unified by our distinctive aesthetic and artist-centred ethos. Led by senior director Freddie Burness, and building on the strong foundations and reputation laid by his father Christopher Burness, the gallery programme focuses on contemporary abstract art, maintaining a strong identity outside of market trends.
