Caernarfonshire is a former administrative county of Wales and one of thirteen historic counties. It was originally formed through the Statute of Rhuddlan in 1284 after Edward invaded Wales. Caernarfonshire as a county and administrative entity was abolished in 1972 under the Local Government Act and then revived, albeit briefly, in 1996 before being renamed Gwynedd.
