In the running for the title of most majestic of all Scottish regions, Argyll and Bute have it all, from clear blue lochs to emerald isles, national parks to prehistoric sites, mountains to jagged coastline. Buteshire, (more commonly known as Bute, or the County of Bute) was one of Scotlands local government counties with its own elected council between 1890 and 1975 and is to this day a registration county of Scotland. The council covered the islands in the Firth of Clyde including Little Cumbrae, Great Cumbrae, the Isle of Arran and the Isle of Bute. Now however the area is known more commonly as Argyll and Bute and though the Isle of Bute remains part of Argyll and Bute, the other islands fall under North Ayrshire.
