In the late 1980's the Smashing Pumpkins presented a different type of what would be described as grunge rock.
Breaking from the conventions of their peers who took much from the punk rock scene, the Pumpkins influences were much, much more diverse. Everything from psychedelia, to jazz, to electronic music found a play in this Chicago rock band's sound. The end result has been one of the most powerful and lasting sounds American indie rock has ever seen.Billy Corgan, the one constant in the Smashing Pumpkins long history is likely to find himself mentioned long after he's gone as one of the best song writers of his (or any) generation. The Pumpkins albums "Siamese Dream" and "Gish" assure that. Creativity mixed with the catchy and lyrics that inspire introspection too. Corgan can write as well as anyone who has ever been in a rock band and the Pumpkins put that into action.With a new album due out soon and a summer tour of U.K. festivals and clubs we haven't heard the last of the Smashing Pumpkins. I'm betting their new music keeps the high standards of all their old work and then some. It's one of the advantages of having a perfectionist like Corgan at the helm!
