In a world where musicianship seems to come second to looks and swagger all too often, it’s important to focus on the exceptionally talented bands when buying concert tickets.
Explosions in the Sky is one of those bands. I discovered this quartet of guitars and percussion through the soundtrack for “Friday Night Lights", an extremely well received, Hollywood (but still edgy) movie about ultra-competitive high school football. The movie also is set in the band’s home state, Texas. Watching that film, it’s nearly impossible to imagine it without the heart pounding synchronization their accompanying music creates. And what’s even more amazing is they achieve it with pure instrumentals. Their obsolescence of vocals speaks directly to your subconscious, caressing your spine, soothing your soul. If you go to concerts to gush over the superficial, then Explosions in the Sky may not be the band to see. However, if that's not the case or if you've ever seen one of your favorite artists fall off the pedestal you put them on (the spiritual equivalent of finding out that Santa doesn’t exist), then you should give this band a shot at redeeming your faith in live performances.
