Judy Garland's gingham dress worn in the classic 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz has sold for £302,000 at an auction in Beverly Hills.
Judy Garland's gingham dress worn in the classic 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz has sold for £302,000 at an auction in Beverly Hills.
The blue and white gingham pinafore dress was created by Adrian Greenberg, a famous MGM costume designer. The sale price is thought to be in line with expectations, the auctioneers Julien's Auctions said.
In 2011 a similar dress that was used during production tests was sold for £572,500, which reflected the fact that fewer versions of the test dress were made.
The two-day Hollywood icons auction also featured other items belonging to internationally-renowned celebrities, including the green dress worn by Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music, which fetched £24,150, Steve McQueen's racing jacket, which sold for £31,500, and a purple woollen skirt that was worn by Marilyn Monroe in the 1954 film River of No Return, also for £31,500.
The buyer of Judy Garland's dress was unfortunately not identified.
