The Walter Scott historical fiction short list has been announced for its second year.

In just two years The Walter Scott Historical Fiction Prize, worth £25,000, has become one of the most sought-after English literature prizes.

The short list for the 2011 award is:

  • C by Tom McCarthy
  • The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell
  • Ghost Light by Joseph O'Connor
  • Heartstone by C J Sansom

The six novels cover Tudor England, Tsarist Russia, imperial Japan, turn of the century Ireland and WW2 London.

In choosing the books, the Judges said potential shortlist candidates' work 'must inhabit the past and enrich our historical understanding'.

The prize is sponsored by the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and shortlisted authors are invited to stay at their home in Scotland.

The winner will be announced on 18 June, as part of the Borders Book Festival.
