Walls within walls

Top storytellers Nick and Emily Hennessey bring tales of Fortress Europe to C&C Gallery, as Steve Johnson installs his artwork - A BERLIN WALL. None of them knew what the other was planning, yet they chose to tackle one of the most difficult challenges of our current world.

Storytelling tends to deal with the Great Universals - Life, Love and Death. But is it willing to tackle that other polite dinner-table taboo, Politics? Story Jam is running a season of nights under the banner Stir It Up. They wanted to see if they could get professional storytellers to find traditional stories that addressed the issues on the News, down the pub and on Facebook and Twitter. They sweet-talked two of the UK's top storytellers - Nick Hennessey (currently on a national tour of Fire In the North Sky) and Emily Hennessey (one of the new stars of the burgeoning storytelling scene.) - into performing together as part of their Stir It Up season.

Simultaneously, and independently, Steve Johnson was invited by gallery owner Joanna Gore to exhibit in the same space.

The chances of a sculptor and two traditional oral storytellers choosing to create work about walls - both literal and figurative - has to be slim. But that is what will be coming together on Thursday 12th December. Nick and Emily will be telling tales about mythic walls that gods put up, dogs slip through, about freedom and control, and about being shut in or kept out. They will be surrounded with Johnson's blank walls and sliced through buildings - and dehumanising effects of barriers.

It won't be a grim night, that's for sure; the Hennesseys deliver a sense of possibility and potency (as well as providing plenty of laughs and gasps along the way). It will be a rare chance for the audience to dive deep into three different creative responses to our world.
