Tiger Woods back on top of world rankings

For the first time in two and a half years Tiger Woods is the world's No.1 ranked golfer after he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational tournament in Bay Hill on Monday.

Woods won the tournament by two strokes from England's Justin Rose and his win was the 77th PGA title of his starred career and the third so far in 2013.

The American, who has won 14 major titles, moves ahead of Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who has had a poor start to the year and Rose, whose second placed finish elevates him to third in the world.

Bay Hill is one of Woods' favourite courses, the latest victory being his eighth there, and the result sets him up nicely for an assault on the first major of the season, the Masters at Augusta which starts on 11 April, another tournament in which he has a history of success.

Woods dropped as low as 58th in the world rankings due to his well publicised personal problems and a recurring knee injury, but his current run of success, which has seen him win six titles in his last 20 PGA tournaments, makes him the firm favourite to claim another green jacket at Augusta, although he hasn't won a major since 2008.

British favourite McIlroy didn't participate at Bay Hill but he can regain the top spot should he win the Houston Open this week, a tournament Woods is set to miss.

The battle at Augusta between these two golfing greats, one still at the start of his career, the other in career maturity, is eagerly awaited by the golfing world.
