The story of the Chorley Pals staged for the first time NEWS
For the first time ever a new play tells the story of the Chorley Pals, a group of soldiers from the same town who went to fight in World War I one hundred years ago.
The story of World War Is Chorley Pals is to be told on stage for the first time this month in a specially-commissioned play at Chorley Little Theatre that hopes to appeal to several generations of theatre-goers.
Theatre group CADOS are staging Pals for 6 nights from Monday 20th June and the show has been written and directed by their Artistic Chairman Mark Jones.
Poignant and moving, the play aims to bring to life the people from World War I to show the society they lived and that their lives, loves and friendships were not much different to how we live now.
NODA-award winning actor Dave Reid plays Bill, an old man with dementia who is befriended by history student Tom in the early 1980s. As their friendship grows, Bill opens up about life at war and the friends he had back then.
Although not shying away from the harshness of the situation, the play also depicts the deep fun and the friendship the Pals had, which motivated them to go away to France and fight for their country.
The production ties into the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, where half the Chorley Pals lost their lives. Barry Callander stars as present-day Tom, showing the effects of the war on our lives now.
Adding authenticity, the large cast are all from Chorley and features many familiar CADOS faces, with Jones coming off the back of winning Best Play for his recent Sherlock Holmes adaptation at the venue.
