Stars turn out for Les Miserables premiere

Leicester Square in London's West End played host to some of the world's most famous actors and celebrities as they turned out to the premiere of the new Les Miserables film.

Leicester Square in London's West End played host to some of the world's most famous actors and celebrities as they turned out to the premiere of the new Les Miserables movie.

In attendance were the stars of the movie, including Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, director Tom Hooper, and many of the cast of the West End stage production who turned up amid a bitterly cold night in London.  Around 3,000 guests arrived to watch the film in two of Leicester Square's largest cinemas.

Set in 19th Century France, the movie tells the tale of political and social upheavals.  Based on writer Victor Hugo's French novel of the same name, the movie features Russell Crowe as police inspector Javert who is intent on hunting down ex-convict Jean Valjean after he breaks his parole.

The film is scheduled for general release in the UK on the 11th January 2013.

The stage version of the film, which opened in October 1985, has now gone on to be the longest running musical in the world.
