Sachs' £20m collection to be auctioned NEWS
Almost 300 art works belonging to the late Gunter Sachs are to be auctioned by Sotheby's in London with a total asking price of more than £20m.
Among the 300 works are surrealist pieces by Magritte and Dali, pop art by Warhol and Lichtenstein and furniture by some of the world's most famous cabinet-makers and designers.
Sotheby's director Cheyenne Westphal said Sachs was one of the most visionary and influential collectors of the 20th century'.
The collection is said to be 'among the most desirable single-owner collections ever to come to market' Westphal added.
The sale will include Warhol's 1974 silkscreen print of Brigitte Bardot, Sach's second wife, over whose house he dropped 1,000 roses from a helicopter just hours after first meeting her. The portrait is estimated at up to £4m, while Richard Avedon's photograph that was used as the source is estimated between £40,000 and £60,000.
Other Warhol works in the auction will include a 1.2metre Flowers painting, estimated to be sold for £3m or more and one of his last self-portraits titled Pink Fright Wig which is estimated between £2-3m.
The epitome of the word playboy, Sachs inherited billions from his mother, a member of the Opel car dynasty and his father, who co-owned one of the biggest car parts suppliers in Germany.
The auction will take place on 22 and 23 May, the works will be on display at Sotheby's in London between 18 and 22 May.
