Pype Hayes Guy Fawkes night loses bonfire

A popular fireworks and bonfire night held in Birmingham for more than 50 years is having to stage the event without the traditional bonfire due to government cutbacks.

An annual council-run bonfire night in Birmingham has decided to stage the event without the usual bonfire, the BBC has reported.

Birmingham City Council has made the cutback at Pype Hayes Bonfire/Fireworks Display in order to save a whopping £30,000 - although they have promised that the traditional firework display will still take place, as will the funfair.

The event on Guy Fawkes Night attracts over 30,000 revellers each year, and takes place in Pype Hayes Park. The Pype Hayes bonfire celebrations have been held in Erdington for over 50 years, but government budget cuts mean that the council are having to stage the night without the bonfire rather than cancelling the event in its entirity.

A statement released by Birmingham City Council said that as fireworks pose a greater safety risk than bonfires, they still wanted to provide the popular public fireworks display in the hope that the public attend an organised display rather than taking the risks of organising one themselves.

The statement read that 'The firework spectacular and funfair will go-ahead this year and this continues to be a major free event in our calendar. The display has been safeguarded against the backdrop of a £212m savings target and as a consequence there will be no bonfire this year. But we are confident the Pype Hayes event will once again be a big success attracting families from across the city.'
