New portrait of The Queen unveiled NEWS
A new portrait of Her Majesty, The Queen, by artist Darren Baker has been unveiled in London to commemorate the Royal British Legion's 90th anniversary.
Fine artist Darren Baker, from Moreton-in-Marsh in Gloucestershire, has created a portrait of The Queen that is so detailed it resembles a photograph more than a painting.
The artist said: 'I felt a great sense of responsibility in completing this commission and following in a great line of royal portrait painters.
'My aim from the outset was to create a portrait that would capture the grace of our wonderful monarch whilst incorporating the essence of the Legion.'
The portrait was unveiled in London at a service in Westminster Abbey in front of 300 guests. The Queen has been patron of the Royal British Legion for 58 years.
The portrait is incredibly detailed and has The Queen's wristwatch set to 11:00 in honour of Remembrance and a spray of five poppies on Her Majesty's coat.
Baker had spent two hour long sittings with The Queen, spending over 400 hours on the painting in total.
'I visited the room where the sitting took place several times and I was struck by the way light filled the room and accentuated the historic and regal objects.'
The national president of the Royal British Legion, Sir John Kiszely, said the painting represents the 'special relationship' between the legion and The British Monarchy.
