Motown Records founder plans musical

Berry Gordy is reportedly developing an autobiographical production featuring classic songs by Diana Ross and other Motown giants.

81 year old founder of Motown Records, Berry Gordy, is said to be developing the musical with a planned budget of $100m.

Gordy founded Motown Records in 1960 and built a colossal music empire from the ground up. As the first record label owned by an African American, Motown launched the careers of artists including Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and the Jackson Five.

Gordy has reportedly teamed up with Kevin McCollum, producer of the iconic musical Rent. The musical is still in its planning stages and it is planned to be filled with classics by Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder, to name but a few.

The musical is likely to be set in Motor City, Detroit, where the music genre was originally created. It has been rumoured that it will be set against the backdrop of the 1960s civil rights movement, though nothing has been confirmed at present.

'Berry's been wanting to do this for a long time,' a source told the New York Post. 'This is his chance to set the record straight ... He's got the money and investors lined up.'
