Mark Cavendish is sprayed with urine in time trial

Mark Cavendish has been sprayed with urine during the Tour de France's Stage 11 time trial. The cyclist from the Isle of Man was attacked by a spectator 24 hours after his crash with Tom Veelers at the sprint finish at Stage 10 on Tuesday.

The Manxman Mark Cavendish has been sprayed with urine by a spectator during Stage 11 time trial at the Tour de France.

Completing the 33km time trial the road cyclist did not want to comment on questions from the media on his return to the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team bus.

The team manager Patrick Lefevere said:#quote#I regret this. I always felt that cycling fans were gentlemen, enthusiastic people.#/quote#

He went on to say that Cavendish is not upset but 'just sad' adding, 'I cannot blame anyone. There are 100,000 or 200,000 people on the road, and one person decided to do this.'

The cyclist's French team mate posted on Twitter.com 'Yesterday I was so proud to see the support at the race but today I am ashamed.'

Although Cavendish was cleared for the incident with Veelers on Tuesday, many fans have been blaming him for the collision.

After the accident Mark Cavendish lost his temper with a reporter, snatching the reporter's recorder out of his hand.

After the tape recorder was returned, he posted on Twitter:#quote#Not seen a replay of the final yet, but was involved in an incident with Tom Veelers. Whatever has happened, if I'm at fault, I'm sorry.#/quote#

Last year the Tour de France was disrupted when tacks were thrown on to the road before the cyclists went past on the Pyrenean stage.
