Margate tour for the Queen

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have been given a tour around Margate in Kent, including the new Turner Contemporary art gallery.

The royal couple were shown around the town, meeting RNLI crews and their families at the lifeboat station, as well as being shown some of the regeneration work undertaken in the town.

The Queen and Prince Phillip visited the Cup Cake Cafe in Margate's Old Town. Lisa Hemingway, from the cafe, said: 'There's always negative stuff about Margate but we're in the middle of a regeneration, it's not finished.'

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh then visited the new Turner Contemporary art gallery.

Met there by artist Tracey Emin, the royal couple heard about the work of Rodin, whose work is on display in the foyer of the £17m art gallery.

Since the gallery's opening in April, over 300,000 people have visited, which is double the number originally estimated for the entire year.

Emin said: 'Until the Turner came, Margate couldn't have got any lower, it was in a terrible state.

'Now the Turner has come, everything is on the up, [even] the beach has been cleaned.'
