A sculpture made of margarine has won an award, and will be displayed at the Belgrave museum.
A Leicester artist has won a gold medal in Luxembourg for his sculpture made entirely from pastry margarine. The street scene of nine figures took one month to complete and will be on display at the Belgrave Museum until July 16th.
Mr. Vipula Athukorale, the artist, said that the sculpture as been kept in his home since the win but he would rather it be on display as it was created for public enjoyment. The sculpture weighs a total of 40kg and has had to be sealed in plastic to preserve it.
The piece is based on a Ronald Embleton painting which depicts a street scene with nine different characters. The artist has an array of other margarine sculptures at his home, including a foot-long Rolls Royce car complete with four passengers travelling to a wedding. Mr. Athukorale has beaten contenders from 50 other countries to win his gold medal at the International Culinary World Cup.
