Lichtenstein sets new auction record

A painting by the infamous pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein, has set a new record for his work by selling at auction for $43m (£27m) this week.

The 1961 painting I Can See the Whole Room! ... and There's Nobody in It! shows a man's face looking through a peephole. It's four square foot in size and created in graphite and oil.

The work was part of the post-war and contemporary art sale at Christie's auction house in New York.

The previous record of the late artist's work was $42m (£26m), set in November last year for his 1964 work, Ohhh... Alright...

Lichtenstein was a figure of colossal importance in the pop-art movement, art influenced by popular culture and comic books. He died in 1997, aged 73.

The auction on Tuesday night also saw Andy Warhol's Four Campbell's Soup Cans sell for a $9.8m (£6.1m).
