Gay kiss ban on pre-watershed TV proposed

An independent review into television content regulations has been commissioned by the government, which could ban same-sex kisses on TV before 9pm.

Newspaper reports claim that the recommendations, which include potential same-sex kiss banning and raunchy dance acts being censored, are supported by prime minister David Cameron.

The four major TV soaps Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks all have gay or lesbian characters and couples in their story lines.

Coronation Street were subject to public complaints after a teenage lesbian kiss was shown on TV. Brooke Vincent, who plays lesbian Sophie Webster on Coronation Street, criticised Cameron on Twitter about the decision: 'I swear David Cameron's meant to be supporting equal rights,' she Tweeted. 'I just think if same-sex kisses are what he is prioritising and concentrating on changing, our country's in trouble.'

A source close to the television content inquiry told the Daily Mail that it is 'not appropriate' for children to see things such as same-sex kissing early in the evening.

A Downing Street source told gay online news service PinkNews that the prime minister has yet to express a view on the report.
