Visit Birmingham has revealed in a study that as many as four in ten children have NEVER been to an art gallery. In addition, half of parents said they make little effort to educate their children about culture or visual arts, relying on their schools to take the children on sight-seeing trips and visits to local museums.
The study has shown that almost 20 per cent of children have never visited a museum, and one in ten had never been outside of their own home town or city to visit other sites in the UK.
The survey was conducted by Visit Birmingham, who questioned 2,000 parents of children aged between 5-12 years old.
Commenting on the survey, which was first published earlier this year, the Director of Marketing Services Emma Gray said, #quote#Culture can take many forms and it's essential our children are encouraged to get involved with this at an early age whether that be attending a pantomime, visiting something like the Staffordshire Hoard or getting involved in dance. There's no doubt that cultural activity enriches day-to-day life and it's important that children embrace our history and culture now, to ensure that it is passed on through the generations.#/quote#
Almost one in three parents said that they did not have the time to travel with their children around the UK for visits to attractions, museums and art galleries, and more than 1 in 4 claiming that they could not afford to visit them.
