St. Peters, Eype and the Eype Centre for the Arts are very honoured to present to you an Exhibition of the Bridport paintings of the Stations of the Cross during Lent and Holy Week 2018.
These paintings were commissioned from local artists of the Bridport Art Society two years ago and formed the basis of a walk of witness in Bridport on Good Friday 2016 led by the Bishop of Salisbury, The Right Reverend Nicholas Holtam.
Churches Together in Bridport and District, displayed the fourteen Stations of the Cross at various locations throughout Bridport and West Bay during Holy Week and Easter 2016. The Stations of the Cross graphically depict the various interactions Jesus has along his final journey to Calvary. Fifteen local artists produced the stations, each set against a different local backdrop, and many using contemporary figures. The fifteenth station, the Resurrection, was displayed in St. Johns, West Bay on Easter Sunday that year. Part-funded by a grant from the Diocesan Aldhelm Mission Fund each station is painted on a 3 foot by 3 foot canvas.
In 2018, we have the privilege of bringing them all together under one roof and putting them on show for only the second time, in St. Peters Church, Eype, where the Eype Centre for the Arts will be putting them on display.
Some artists revealed that they were taken to spiritual depths, for example Val Corgan, who painted the seventh Station, Jesus falls for the second time, says, I was intrigued by the brief for this work because of the need to include a recognisable background as well as putting any figures into modern day dress. In painting this piece, it has therefore occurred to me that modern day struggles are much the same as they were in Christs day. In todays society there are many crosses to bear.
The Reverend Philip Ringer, who co-ordinated the project for Churches Together in Bridport and District, said, These artists really took on board the brief and made truly splendid interpretations of the various stations. I am sure that many people will want to come at some time during the display period to admire the quality of the work.
There is no entrance fee but donations will be shared between Churches Together in Bridport (for their work on the 'Silent Soldiers' project they have planned for November's centenary of the Armistice) and the Eype Centre for the Arts. Refreshments will be available.
The Exhibition is open 2-5pm every Saturday and Sunday of Lent 2018 17th February to 25th March and then every afternoon through Holy Week 26th March to Easter Monday, 2nd April.
On Palm Sunday, 25th March 2018, at 4.30pm, we welcome the Bishop of Sherborne, The Right Reverend Karen Gorham to St. Peters to lead us in a service of the Stations, surrounded by these amazing paintings. During this service, Matt Kingston will be introducing the premiere of his new choral piece a new setting of the Crux Fidelis. Everyone will be made welcome in attending either the exhibition, the service or both.
