Donald enhances world No1 ranking NEWS
Luke Donald has been awarded the PGA player of the year award to top a year in which the world No.1 ranked Brit is likely to finish top of both the American and European tour money lists.
World No.1 Luke Donald has won two awards, the PGA Player of the Year and the Vardon Trophy, to go along with his recent confirmation as winner of the US Tour money list. With eight tournaments left to go in the European Tour he also leads that money list, ahead of Rory McIlroy.
Donald, who has earned £4.19m in the US this year, is the first Englishman since Nick Faldo in 1990, to win the prestigious PGA award and he had cause for double celebration with the award of the Vardon Trophy, which goes to the player with the lowest scoring average on the Tour.
Meanwhile, on the European Tour Donald has so far earned a further £3.34m, which puts him £1.14m ahead of US Open champion Rory McIlroy. Should Donald retain his lead in Europe he will become the first player ever to top both the US and European Tour's money lists.
His victory at the recent Disney Classic in Florida ensured his American success and it was an unlikely win, given that at the start of the final round he was in 14th place, five shots behind the lead. Donald has shown remarkable consistency this year recording 14 top-10 finishes from 19 tournaments.
Donald will almost certainly finish the year ranked No.1 in the world, although he will still feel there is plenty of room for improvement as he is yet to win a major in his career, an achievement that still divides the great players from the merely good.
Could 2012 be Donald's year? He obviously has the talent.
