Chelsea Flower Show celebrates 100 years NEWS
The Chelsea Flower Show will be expecting over 160,000 people to visit the 11 acre-site over the next five days. This is one of the biggest and most popular flower shows in the world and for the last 100 years has been held in an area no bigger than 2 football pitches.
The Chelsea Flower Show which will be held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea this week is celebrating its 100th Birthday.
The annual show has taken place since May 1913 when it was called the Great Spring Show, and little did they know that it would grow to be one of the most popular and biggest flower shows in the whole world.
Queen Mary was one of the first members of the Royal Family to visit the flower show, and 100 years on the Royal Family still attend each year. This year is no exception as the The Queen will be given a sneak preview today accompanied by her Grandson Prince Harry the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke of York and Princess Beatrice, before the crowds descend from tomorrow.
Prince Harry will be showing his Grandmother the garden which has been created by Jinny Blom for Sentebale.org, which helps vulnerable people in Lesotho.
The Prince, who is said to have been passionate about the garden, was sent preliminary drawings whilst he was serving in Afghanistan.
Since the first ever show in 1913, the Flower Show has attracted thousands of visitors each year from gardeners and show-goers as well as The Royal Family.
The whole show is squeezed into a venue no bigger than the size of two football pitches by the River Thames, and, according to the BBC quite a few people involved with the show including, grounds people, exhibitors and locals would be happy if the venue were to change.
The Chelsea Flower show takes 800 people 33 days to build and organise, and in the past has been so overcrowded with people it was deemed as 'dangerously overcrowded'.
A cap was placed in 1988 on the number of visitors that were allowed into the flower show, due to the previous year's shows in 1986 and 1987 being so full they were 'scary'.
There aren't many cities in the world that would get away with having such a popular international show being squeezed into a such a small area, but of course if the show were to be moved from Chelsea, then it wouldn't be so famously known as the Chelsea Flower show.
This year will see Britain's rarest flower on display. This orchid, known as Lady's Slipper, was rescued by scientists from extinction in the 1930's, and will have it's own personal security guard.
The orchid will be part of the Le Jardin de Yorkshire which has been designed to celebrate the centenary of the show and the Tour De France which for the first time ever will run through Yorkshire in 2014.
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show will run from 21 May to 25 May 2013. For More information go to www.britevents.com with tickets available from just £51.99.
