Bardem to be new Bond villain

Academy award winning actor Javier Bardem has confirmed he will be playing a villain in the next James Bond film.

The Spanish star, aged 42, revealed his news during his appearance on the US news programme Nightline.

The latest Bond film is known as Bond 23, though this is a temporary fixture. It is widely rumoured that it will be called Skyfall.

Work on the film was suspended as of April 2010 due to the uncertain future of film studio MGM after filing for bankruptcy protection. Plans to rescue and restructure the MGM studios involved Spyglass Entertainment, who are now in charge of the company.

Bardem, who is married to actress Penelope Cruz, has said he is very excited at the prospect of this role: 'my parents took me to watch the [Bond] movies and I saw all of them, so to play that is going to be fun.'

Daniel Craig will play Bond for the third time, he is the sixth actor to play the British agent in the series' 48-years of running. Casino Royale, where Craig made his Bond debut, was the most successful of the Bond films to date, taking £385m in Box Offices worldwide.

Bardem is commended for his versatility in roles, from playing a villain in 2007's No Country for Old Men to playing an artist in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
