Banksy auction fetches £400k NEWS
A collection of art by Banksy has been sold at an auction in London, fetching more than £400,000.
One of 18 pieces sold, Girl and Balloon brought in £73,250 which is five times its estimated price. The piece was created on the backing of a Ikea frame.
An auction first, Leopard and Barcode sold for the first time for £75,650.
The Urban Art auction took place at Bonhams in London.
Banksy is a guerilla graffiti artist from Britain who still remains anonymous after many years, with work in multiple continents.
In a separate Bonhams sale, the screen print of a dollar sign by pop artist icon Andy Warhol sold for £44,450.
The piece was initially painted onto a handkerchief and given to a friend as a gift in 1981. The picture has been mounted onto board since to aid its longevity.
Both sales seem to contract big claims made earlier this week by art critic Julian Spalding. Spalding predicted contemporary art would soon fall by the waist-side with work by high profile artists becoming 'worthless'.
