Avengers tops UK box office NEWS
Marvel Avengers Assemble takes first place in the UK box office chart after receiving a £15.78m in its opening week.
Marvel Avengers Assemble sees comic superheroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) join forces to save the world against Thor's evil brother, Loki.
Its takings this weekend topped those of Spider-Man 3's £11.83 opening in 2007 and The Dark Knight's £11.19m 2008 opening.
Coming in at second place in the charts is Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, released 20 April. The rom-com starring Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt has taken £3.1m since its opening week.
The Hunger Games is third in the box office charts, beating The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists by £80,000.
The Cabin in the Woods took £0.56m in the past week, pushing Battleship to sixth place after topping the charts on its first two weeks of release.
Following The Avenger's success and praise for his role as The Hulk, Mark Ruffalo has been given the go-ahead to play Hulk in six more films as Bruce Banner and his angry green alter-ego.
The Avengers, as it is known in the US, will be opening across cinemas in the States on Friday 4 May.
