Anthony Doerr wins Short Story award NEWS
American author Anthony Doerr has been awarded the Sunday Times Short Story prize for his 'outstanding work of fiction'.
Anthony Doerr beat five other authors to be awarded the Short Story prize, including Man Booker Prize winner Hilary Mantel.
Judge Melvyn Bragg called Doerr's story, The Deep, 'an outstanding work of fiction'.
The Sunday Times award is billed as the world's most valuable prize for short stories with a prize of £30,000 up for grabs.
Roshi Fernando, Yiyun Li, Will Cohu, Gerard Woodward and Hilary Mantel were nominated alongside Doerr and will all receive £500 for making the short list.
'I've read this story many times and still find it profoundly moving,' Bragg said.
The story, set in Depression-era Detroit, is not the only short story that has earned Doerr a title; he recently won The Story Prize in the US for his second collection of short stories, Memory Wall.
The Sunday Times Short Story Award is a new award that was launched in 2010 to honour the talent of short-fiction writers.
The winner was announced at an awards dinner in Oxford.
