South Lakes Wild Animal Park in Cumbria has a wide choice of animals to see. The Park opened in 1994 and has built up becoming very actively involved in conservation and breeding programmes, and was awarded the Top Visitor Attraction in the Lake District for 1999 and 2000 by the Cumbria Tourist Awards.
The park has a lot of character, with winding paths and wooded areas. Lemurs are free to explore the park, as they jump and climb through the trees. The Australian Bush gives the unique experience of hand-feeding the kangaroos and wallabies, emus and peafowl. The Park has the largest collection of Kangaroo species in any zoo in the world with 10 species!
There are several reserves: Africa, South America, Australia, Madagascar and Asia, and other animals to see include sumatran tiger, amur tiger, zebra, cheetah, giraffe, white rhino, gemsbok, meerkats, maned wolf, ring-tailed coati, siamang, white-handed gibbon, celebes black macaque, geoffrey's cat, margay, ocelot, red panda, tamarin, collared peccary, tapir, capybara and more.
There are picnic areas and benches around the park enabling you to take a rest or to relax in the peaceful surroundings and watch the peacocks roam around freely.
Facilities include parking, cafe, playground and gift shop. There is also an education centre. Animal adoption is available.
South Lakes is involved in over 30 international breeding programmes. They are also a partner in the Indonesian Sumatran Tiger Project and are the largest fund raiser for Sumatran Tiger conservation in the world.
