Discover Ruskin's legacy and inspiration among eight unique gardens, which have been lovingly restored or created. Explore the changing faces of this extraordinary and dynamic estate.
Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin was originally a modest six or eight-roomed villa, built at the end of the 18th Century by a man named Thomas Woodville, in three acres of wooded and rocky land.
The original seven rooms that Ruskin used during his lifetime are open to the public and filled with original furniture, art and objects. As Brantwood is still very much a home, the spirit of Ruskin pervades throughout the site.
The beautiful gardens include the famous Zig-Zaggy, based upon designs first sketched by Ruskin 130 years ago, and is said to represent Dante's Purgatorial Mount. Fully realised today in contemporary form, it allows you to begin your tour of the gardens by making an allegorical journey to Paradise!
Brantwood is the most beautifully situated house in the Lake District. It enjoys the finest lake and mountain views in England, and there is no other house in the district with such a diversity of literary and artistic associations. From 1872 until 1900 Brantwood was the home of that most eminent of Victorians, John Ruskin. Brantwood is open to the public all year.
