Hadspen House and Nursery Houses

Created and managed by Nori and Sandra Pope, Hadspen Garden in Somerset, England, is at the cutting edge of colourist garden design. Where developing monochrome, rather than excessive contrast, is used to enhance the emotional impact of colour. Many rare and unusual plants have been used to create more than a kilometre of beautifully blended colour themed borders, most of which can be purchased from the nursery. Also available is the Hadspen Collection which includes all the new plants bred by Nori and Sandra.
Hadspen Garden is a superb 2 hectare south-facing site built upon the original kitchen garden for the house and set against a backdrop of mature deciduous woodland. Despite the heavy alkaline clay soil, a garden has been established on this site since 1880 when Margaret Hobhouse came here as a young bride with plants brought from her family home.
The garden contains an interesting collection of features including 2 dramatic Victorian terraces, the lower of which incorporates a large stone-and-brick cistern, now a lily pond, and a 'D' shaped walled garden, originally devoted to the production of fruit and vegetables.
Our nursery is located on the same site as the original nursery established by Penelope Hobhouse (garden writer, designer) and Eric Smith (plantsman, breeder). Carrying on their tradition we have continued the breeding, selecting and introduction of new plants from our nursery to create the Hadspen Collection.
