Royal Pavilion Houses
This opulent seaside home was remodelled in Indian style by John Nash 1815-1823
for George, Prince Regent and later George IV. The Royal Pavilion grew over 35 years from a simple farmhouse to a spectacular palace. In 1787 Henry Holland extended the original farmhouse into a neo-classical building know as the 'Marine Pavilion'.
The restoration of the Royal Pavilion commenced in the mid-19th century following the purchase of the Palace from Queen Victoria by the town in 1850. After many decades of neglect, a programme of restoring the stonework and structure of the Pavilion began in 1982, lasting some ten years and costing over £10 million.
Architect John Nash conceived the Royal Pavilion and gardens as a whole. The gardens reflect the great revolution in landscape gardening that began in the 1730s. Formal layouts of straight lines and symmetrical shapes were replaced with curving paths, natural groups of trees and shrubs and picturesque views.
