Gainsborough House Houses
The museum and art gallery at the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough. Gainsborough's House, the only birthplace of the great British artist open to the public in Britain, opened as a museum in 1961. It shows a large collection of his paintings, drawings and prints as well as temporary exhibitions. At the back of the museum is a walled garden which includes a four hundred year-old mulberry tree. It is used for exhibitions of sculpture during the summer months. At the bottom of the garden is a coach house built in 1928 which has been converted for use as a print workshop.
One of England's greatest painters, Gainsborough was as much a master of landscape as portraits.
The collection at Gainsborough's House includes fine paintings, drawings and etchings from throughout Gainsborough's career.
The Print Workshop at Gainsborough's House is an open-access studio available to anyone interested in printmaking. The Workshop was established in 1978 in premises opening onto the charming garden at Gainsborough's House.
2005 is the 25th anniversary of the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Gainsborough's House is only one of countless museums or organisations who have benefitted from the support of the NHMF. The collection here includes nine outstanding works by Gainsborough acquired by NHMF funding. .
