Kentwell Hall and Gardens Houses
We welcome you to visit our fascinating house. Take a glimpse into both the past and present of this unique family home. You can do this whenever you come but especially if you visit when we step back in time during one of our award-winning Re-Creations of Tudor or WWII Everyday Life. Kentwell pioneered domestic Living History Events in the UK. And 25 years on the Re-Creations are as magical as ever.
Kentwell is not a 'stately home'as generally understood - certainly its occupants are not stately. It is very much a lived-in and loved family home, something it has been for over 500 years.
From its approach by a three quarter mile long ancient Lime Avenue, with trees meeting cathedral-like overhead, to its mellow soft red brickwork and broad moats everything at Kentwell combines to produce an air of timeless tranquillity.
A delight of for those creating a House, rather than merely taking over what others have done previously, is the opportunity to indulge their own fantasies. Kentwell is no exception. The Phillips have added many fancies of their own. The famous two dimensional brick-paved Maze, The most basic, but perhaps the best, Camera Obscura, the simplicity of which astounds. The immensely tall Ancient Yews which the Phillips have clipped to shape. The re-instated Icehouse, again fully functional (but wants ice). The huge Sculpted Cedar Tree. The Yew Castle gradually taking a recognizable shape. Baron Munchausen's Galleon an interesting film prop now performing as an eyecatcher. Painted walls, Ceilings and Floors. .
